O God, our Maker and Redeemer, You wonderfully created us and in the incarnation of Your Son yet more wondrously restored our human nature. Grant that we may ever be alive in Him who made Himself to be like us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
December 30 is the sixth day of Christmas, which was traditionally celebrated in the twelve days which fell between Christmas Day and the Feast of Epiphany (Jan. 6). According to the song, our lover gave us six geese a laying on this day. If you subscribe the notion that this song was a coded means for Catholics to communicate the faith under persecution in England after the Reformation, then these six geese represent the six days of creation. Did you catch that in the prayer. It is easy to jump over. God wonderfully created us and all that is.
We pray that we may ever be alive in Him who made Himself to be like us. That starts with God’s love for his creation. He made it. He called it very good. Christ has been faithful. Christ has loved. He went to that cross and submitted to death in the confidence that His Father would receive His spirit and raise Him. That’s a strong hope! That Jesus has become like us to give us those very things. Even our faith is not really ours. It is Jesus’ faith given to us. We love with His love and our hope is always in Him. God has made us. That grounds our very existence. We are not self-made. We are not the products of some random and unintentional process. God has made us to be his own.
