Easter Monday – Prayer of the Week

Almighty God the Father, through Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, You have overcome death and opened the gate of everlasting life to us. Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of our Lord’s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by Your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The liturgical name of this day is “Easter Monday.” My father said he remembered that there used to be church services on this day too. I am not sure that a little boy thought that this was the best way to observe that God had opened the gate to everlasting life or that he would not have found another way to celebrate with joy the Lord’s resurrection. But there is a sense that the joy of Easter just cannot be contained in a day. God has overcome our death.

If you get a chance, go stand in a cemetery today. Death has gripped our imagination so firmly that we can hardly imagine a victory over death. It is so relentless and efficient. But Christ has risen from the grave. One tomb stands empty. Its power has been broken and that promises that one day all the graves will be broken, and the dead shall rise to new life. Sing a stanza of a good Easter hymn, laugh a little at death, and look forward to the resurrection of your loved ones. Make a space in your life to celebrate this joy. Do not let this Easter pass without basking in the promise of God.
