Community Warehouse is a local nonprofit that collects and redistributes donated furniture and household goods to low-income individuals and families in Oregon and Southwest Washington. By partnering with over 150 non-profit and social service agencies, they fulfill an average of 180 requests each month, serving nearly 6,000 people each year.
Community Warehouse is one of many furniture banks involved in a nation-wide effort to distribute furniture and household goods to families and individuals in need. Furniture banks are not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organizations whose mission is to provide free furniture to families struggling with poverty and other severe life challenges. These families are financially unable to furnish their own homes even to a minimal standard. Furniture banks collect donations of gently used furniture and provide the furniture for free to families in need via referrals from other social service agencies, churches, schools, employers, etc.
The families served by furniture banks include the previously homeless, unemployed and working poor, battered women and children in retreat, immigrants, individuals with mental or physical disabilities, victims of fire, robbery, and natural disasters, etc. They have housing, but are faced with the harsh reality that their “home” is empty or severely under-furnished – without beds for the children, a table, chairs and dishes to share meals, or even a sofa to sit on and relax. After basic expenses such as rent, utilities, food and clothing are paid, there’s little if anything left for the common household furnishings we all take for granted.
Why They Need Your Help
Community Warehouse serves between 40 and 50 families every week. The Warehouse depends on donated goods to meet each client’s basic needs and to keep their doors open.
How St. Michael’s Participates
Our quilters make quilts for Community Warehouse. In addition to this, we hold a continuous collection drive for small, essential household items – new or gently used – that will help restock the Warehouse shelves and keep usable household items from ending up in the landfills. What better opportunity to clean out your cupboards of excess goods, knowing they will be reused by people in need!
What the Warehouse Needs Most Today
- Silverware Cooking Utensils
- Manual Can Openers Pots & Pans
- Drinking Glasses Bowls
- Coffee Makers Blenders
- Dish Towels Bath Towels
- Sheets (twin, full, queen) Alarm Clocks
- Pillows Blankets
- Everything in clean, working condition
- Furniture 6’ or smaller (unless they are tables, mattresses, couches or desks)
- Upholstery: free of stains and tears
- Free-standing (doesn’t have to be wired, mounted, installed, etc.)
Small household items can be dropped off at St. Michael’s Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon (except for holidays). For large furniture items, please make arrangements with the Community Warehouse.
